Train Yard

West Virginia

Submitted for the December Holiday Scavenger Hunt.

Other entries can be seen here.

Something you DO NOT WANT for a Gift.

This is the Norfolk Southern track. You have to imagine all the coal around the tracks. I do not want a lump of coal. I could have photographed a lump of coal but I couldn't figure out how to make it look interesting. :)

Superb landscape image with this foreground clarity and soft (morning?) light in the background. V

I'll take it!! My steam engine burns "Pocahontas" soft coal from your neck of the woods. I have to drive to a place south of Buffalo to get it.

And the black dust, everywhere... Great shot, reminds me of my home town in PA. We had a coal mine and everyone worked there. V

An interesting scene nicely captured and far better than a lump of coal ;-). V. (Fascinating that Patrick knows this place!)

A great feel for the yard given by this image, and I like the tree covered hills in the background. V

a lively grid of lines against the misty hills and gentle sky...

A train yard scene, so typical but interesting to see. The lump of coal can wait. V

It is mucher nicer looking at this than a lump of coal. Thank you :-)

This looks like a nice playground for children, if it would be a Märklin Eisenbahn, but its reality and it doesn´t look so nice. Great entry and shot, Karen! v.

a very intense capture of a rail yard, it transmits very well a cold day and emptiness
(and not e.g. the warmth of a coal fire) very well seen and captured V

Taken from a good point, great picture. v

I'll bet my grandfather saw many scenes like this. He was a train engineer in West Virginia for his whole life. V

Great use of lines in this composition taken from a well chosen vantage point. A lump of coal would be bad enough, but a switching yard would certainly be overwhelming. "V"

Karen, I remember me this scene, I was many times there in Norfolk to load coal for Sidmar in Belgium, I was a seaman (engineer) with the ms Mineral Belgium (once we stayed there for 49 days at anchor waiting for our turn). V++++++
