The minimum distance helps to create enough make-up air. It's also necessary so that the back of the machines are accessible. Imagine 5 dryers in a row, with less than 18 inches to the wall. It would be virtually impossible to access the rear of the middle machines.

The MDG51PN has a build-in fire suppression system. Each dryer has gas and water lines.
