A Torii gate at the Meiji Shrine. The Japanese believe that the Torii represents the transition from non-religious to the sacred. Meiji Shrine (a Shinto shrine) was constructed for Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Construction started in 1912 and completed in 1921. It occupies 700,000 sq. meters of evergreen forest in Tokyo.
