I did get the humour - but you have to realise how different your housing is to ours, which becomes a dominant factor when viewing the shot. We just hardly ever see wooden houses here, they're more brick or stone, and I think they would command high insurance premiums because of the potential fire risk.
As for huge santas, yes, if you go to the big housing estates, you see huge santas, flashing reindeer and all manner of delights - not where i live in trendy, left wing, middle class/student Oxford, but then this area is considered very snotty (tiny terraced houses though they are).

Gingerbread houses?! I'm sure Mike wasn't thinking any such thing when he shot it. I interpret this as the corruption of the Christmas spirit from charity into competition and I thought it was quite funny. But for all I know, giant Santas could be the norm in England. - Warren
