Summar in the Summer

Leitz Wetzlar Summar 5cm f/2.0

This 1938 lens is Leitz first version of an f/2.0 lens. Nowadays the soft surface of this lens is commonly found in poor condition as a result of lens cleaning; because of this, it has a reputation as soft, flare-prone, and low-contrast. When the glass is in good condition it is still low-contrast and flare-prone compared to today's lenses, but it is not soft. The lens has unusually good bokeh for a six-bladed aperture and occasionally produces images with remarkable depth. I use this lens on a Leica M8 with a B&W 486 UV/IR cut filter mounted via a SOOGZ adapter which is intended to mount 39mm filters on older LTM lenses which take 36mm clip-on filters.
