A scenic rail trip up a tree-covered hill, pulled by a steam-powered Shay (geared engine). On this holiday weekend, a mock train robbery was enacted. Visible in the photos are the remains of two trestles that burned. Previously, they allowed a nonstop trip, and the train passed over its own path. The RR now uses a double switchback to reach the summit.
The day was dreadfully hot, the baby next to us was screaming during the entire journey (pacifiers had not been invented yet), and overall it was a realistic old-time rail experience.
