As has become an annual tradition, Le Peloton members go on a Santa ride just before Christmas. One of our members rides in a full Santa suite while his "reindeer" (complete with antlers, bells and whatever other decorations will safely attach to their bikes or persons) lead him out on the roads. The route is a leisurely one out to the airport where we then ride through the departure terminals distributing candy canes to the kids and good cheer to all. Surprisingly, we always get a good reception and thankfully none of our members have been tazered or otherwise discouraged. It is amazing to see the reaction Santa gets not only in the airport terminals, but also on the road where it is not unheard of for young women to lean out of their cars to give Santa a hug, and drivers of all ages, creeds, and colours to give a cheery wave (all fingers rather than just one!!) and honk of the horn. The ride makes a stop -- usually at the Cannery Cafe out in Steveston -- for a leisurely breakfast and a bracing glass or two of "reindeer juice," after which we weave our way back home for a warm shower ready to start the holidays.
