Seems the lead guys on the ride failed to read the sign on the way to Earl's Cove (click on photo)

Actually, this photo tells two stories.

What really happened was that a stray dog
and a vehicle traveling a bit too close and a bit too fast
ended Stan's hopes to rejoin the Le Peloton eschelon
making their way up the Sunshine Coast from Langdale to Earl's Cove.

Stan was driving an MPV support vehicle to Earl's cove.
On arrival, he had planned to take his bike off the rack
and cycle back to the group riding up from the ferry.
A few kilometers from Earl's Cove, however,
a stray dog walked onto the highway.
Stan stopped in time,
but the driver behind him, driving a jeep and trailer,
had to veer violently to the right
to avoid slamming into Stan's beloved Trek bike
on the back of the MPV.
Instead, the jeep hit the dog, trashed the "Slow sign",
then nearly flipped before it ended up in a deep ditch
to the side of the road.

Thankfully, the driver was OK. The jeep, amazingly enough,
had only a minor scratch on the bumper. The dog, unfortunately,
didn't fare as well.
It disappeared into the bush, limping badly.
Stan spent over an hour looking for it, no dice.

Needless to say, by the time he made it to Earl's Cove,
the Le Peloton crew were already starting to arrive on their bikes
with stories of the incredible ride they did,
averaging 31.1 kph (19.3 mph) on a rolling, twisting road
from Langdale, a distance of 80.2km (50 miles)!

With the mangled sign now in the ditch, perhaps they didn't read it....
