The oldest brick house in Nicholas County,Kentucky, was constructed by Lottimore Hayden in 1796-97. This farm is located on the banks of the Hinkston Creek. The property is part of the original land grant given to William Hayden, Lott's father, along with five of his sons for their service in the Revolutionary War. They were given land grants in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Lottimore was well to do and arrived in Kentucky with slaves. The slaves quarters were located outside and to the north of the house. The basement was used for disciplining the slaves as evidenced by the bars on the basement windows. The Hayden Farmhouse was built when George Washington was president! Wow! Only 4 years prior, in 1793, Washington had laid the cornerstone for our nations capitol in Washington D.C.! Kentucky had been a state for only about 4 years.
The house is currently undergoing private restoration by its new owner.
