Hazard is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in Perry County, Kentucky and was founded in 1790 by Elijah Combs and his seven brothers. The county and county seat were later named for American naval hero Commodore Oliver-Hazard Perry, who was victorious over the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
