Bust Your Butt Falls - North Carolina

Bust Your Butt Falls is right next to Hwy. 64 west as you go from Highlands, NC to Franklin, NC. There are no signs and if you are not paying attention you will miss it. You will come up on a opening where you wil see the river next to the roads and many large boulders and rocks, there is a place to pull off on the left, but be careful, you should drive past and turn around to get to the pull over. The safest viewing is right here from the pull over on the road, but to get closer there are a few spots where you can work your way down to the water. The best photo spots require some careful climbing down and around some rocks.

These shots were all taken with a Canon 20D and 24-70L Lens using a B+W ND103 and B+W CP mounted on a Bogen 3021Pro tripod and using a Bogen 322RC2 Ball/Grip head.

I rate this falls at 3-4 and access difficulty at 1 (4-5 if you climb down to the falls on the rocks).

I was there with a few friend about 6 years ago. We were having a great time going down the falls and hanging out when I saw my friend at the top of the falls holding a girls head up out of the water. Her foot had gotten stuck between two rocks and the water was rushing over her. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't dislodge her foot. The paramedics were called right away as she had asthma and the water was really cold. She was stuck for nearly 2 hours. The rescue team had to break her foot to get her out. I think that's why they don't want people swimming around there.

I have not been to what we used to call Bust-Your-A_ _ Falls since 1982. What a time we used to have there. We used to camp just upriver from the falls. Too bad it is now closed from the public as this was the BEST waterfall slide around. These pictures are not of the same place.

The man is smart enough to "know" that you don't "play" on waterfalls. The locals know this. Idiots from Fla. keep ignoring signs & smart advice..& that is why people die. If you wanna have fun go & raft down the Nantahala.

I've gone down Bust Your Butt Falls many times with my kids and this is not Bust Your Butt Falls. I hear that BYBF is closed to public access now and that's very sad. John from Florida

maybe the man didn't want anyone else dying there. Today a man drowned trying to save his son who got his foot stuck at the falls.

These pics are not of the real "Bust-Your-Butt Falls located on the Horsepasture River. The real BYBF is dramatically different and and much more of an attraction. The unfortunate thing is the falls are no longer accessible for fun due to the selfishness of a particular mean old man.
