Why the compound?
When we arrived in Beijing in July 2008, we chose the Sanlitun Diplomatic Compound for its family-friendliness, sense of community, excellent location and retro-chic character. Being able to play volleyball in the living room is big plus. Plus, we weren’t going to be caught dead in a villa in Shunyi or a glass-and steel high-rise in the CBD. The place was pretty run down when we first saw it. We restored the floor ourselves with the help of a designer friend. The management didn’t help, but it didn’t object either."
