3 January

All the accouterments that are necessary for the milking of a cow.
Bessie, of course. A 12 stall pit (6 to a side). The milk getters (I'll get the real names of these things as I go) that attach to the udders. The disenfectant (the iodine looking contaniner on the left). The vacumn system which runs the whole thing. And the butt guard. (I'll get the real names of these thing as I go on).

My ignornace about this whole business is matched only by my excitement and curiosity. Did you know cows only have lower teeth? I didn't know all cows have horns, not just the males. Their tongues are smoother than a dog's tongue. The have only 4 udders that milk at a time. They are separated from their calves almost from the moment of birth (the calves are fed from milk that will not be processed for human consumption). And that's only some of the answers I was given :)
Now that butt guard thing. I'll be posting more into a separate gallery which will show why it's a good thing there is a stainless steel butt guard thing that the cattle push up against for the 15 minutes or so it takes to get between 40 and 60 pounds of milk from each of them..... I'm in the market for a used 1D.

Great information.
I guess you know that the future of my milk drinking rests upon what you capture this year....LOL

She obviously didn't have time to do her nails =)

Absolutely wonderful shot! Voted!! Did you happen to see the episode of the Simple Life when Paris and Nicole worked on the farm? :)

This is a fascinating photo, Karen....My imagination is working overtime trying to picture how in the world you got it. Very well done!

Wynn..... a 1D is supposed to be sealed right? Against everything. Everything. The cattle aren't particular where they um..... go. And without that butt guard thing you see on the left, well, can you say projectile??? I wonder what they'd do down at the NJ service center with a 1D that was returned for cleaning.........

OK - now I can understand your fascination with cattle (after all, JW is afflicted with the same disease ...), but I'm completely lost with the quick transition to the used 1D? Are you saying that you would wear a sign that says: "Will milk cows for a used 1D?"

How sophisticated. My mother would occasionally send me out with a bucket sterilized with boiling water, a bucket of cow feed and a little bench. She was not quite sure when she'd get the milk or how much so I got to do it on days when the house was overloaded with milk.
I really feel sorry for these poor cows with the clipped ears and the tagged ears. Bless their big udders and hearts.

What time was this 4:00 or 5:00 a.m.?
Sure beats the old bucket and stool days!

Oh yeah. Perfect perspective. I love the head position. I also like the hanging bottle off to the left. V
