Inside Passage

actually the belowdecks of the whaleship Charles Morgan. Oliver is not a little guy-standing ~6'2" (correct me Ol if I'm off an inch or 2) and he couldn't stand up straight in any part the ship. I was feeling the rafters, and I stand maybe 5'5" on a good day. Claustraphobia, anyone?? And can you imagine spending years inside this vessel, thru ice and snow and blistering heat?? Packed in the berths they said were 6' long but didn't look like I could stretch out completely, and with 23 of your closest friends, head to toe, Before the Mast?? And the stench of burning whale oils, hoping for more to make the trip profitable. An amazing life, in the 19th century, and some would say the whalers were not the worst off of all the seafarers.

Guest 08-Aug-2006 20:31
Nice red hat!!!!
did that count :)
Bob Foisel08-Aug-2006 14:47
I'm sold... I'll keep my 6'2" on ground.
Herb 08-Aug-2006 13:47
Good capture of a tight environment
Neal Nye08-Aug-2006 11:41
Not an environment I would enjoy. Nice job of capturing that closed-in feeling.

Great illustrating shot.

Interesting history - but I don't share the desire to have been born before my own time!
Guest 08-Aug-2006 09:17
wow he looks like a giant in this picture....i used the L lens as a reference. :)
Guest 08-Aug-2006 08:16
I thought maybe it was the weight of the lens that made him hunch over!
Dan Chusid08-Aug-2006 05:53
Stick an 'a' in there, would'ya?
Dan Chusid08-Aug-2006 05:51
Wonder what the Lilliputions would say....
Greg Harp08-Aug-2006 04:55
Terrific candid. Probably the original crews were a bit shorter... Thanks for the history. :)

When I think of the early travellers crossing unchartered waters in these ships I think I know why I'm a land lubber !! :>)
Cindy Flood08-Aug-2006 03:21
Thank you for bringing us the interesting narrative. Interesting candid, too.
Doug Kessler08-Aug-2006 03:12
I commented earlier before you had the narrative. this is a cool shot and yes, those must have been some tough times aboad that whaling vessel.
Robin Reid08-Aug-2006 03:08
And he has a great lens. Rafters and all you guys must have had a whale of an experience.
Guest 08-Aug-2006 03:01
Are you sure he is not a 5'3 guy with a 50 mm ;-)?
Coleen Perilloux Landry08-Aug-2006 02:54
Looks at the sturdy, beautiful beams. And, the gorgeous old barrels. I think people were shorter back then, too.
Guest 08-Aug-2006 02:52
Seriously he's just bent over because of the weight of that Canon lens, LOL!
Great job demonstrating the close quarters!
Jen Bixler08-Aug-2006 02:51
Honey, I blew up the photographer!
Bryan Ramsay08-Aug-2006 02:41
It must have been something to spend months at a time in a confined space like this! -BJ
Deborah Lewis08-Aug-2006 02:36
My guess is - a low ceiling! But I will sample what is in barrel #2....
Doug Kessler08-Aug-2006 02:30
Either that is a low ceiling, or he is a giant : )
