Due to heavy winter snow added to spring rains Chilmark Pond was at a record high level. Long before it reaches this point a bulldozer should be sent to the beach and a "cut" is made between the pond and ocean. The pond flows out to the ocean, and if right, winds and current force the beach to close up, sealing the pond from the ocean tides. When the cut is opened in the fall it makes for good surf casting as the bait fish from the pond attract blues and bass.
