George and Anna Riebel were my great-grandparents. George and Anna's fourth child, Flossie Perrault, was my grandmother. She used to talk about living in a sod house while their permanent home was being built and how edible mushrooms proliferated around the perimeter. I am so sorry now not to have listened more closely to family stories that I heard throughout my childhood. It's funny what you remember and what you forget. I do want to visit Truax before I die.

My father and his parents were homesteaders from 1925 to 1930 on a piece of land very close to Truax. They were unsuccessful in establishing the farm and they moved on to Montreal. My father's name was George Dimitrie. My Grandfather, Trifu Dimitrie and my Grandmother Sofia Dimitrie. I know from a book that I have on Truax that there was a Romanian Orthodox church in Truax. Sadly my father died when I was 11. I never met my grandparents. I believe that there had to have been people who would have met or come to known them during their 5 year stay near Truax. I have written to the Truax Facebook page with no luck. I have to believe that there is a record somewhere of their homesteading years near Truax. They were immigrants from Yugoslavia. My brother has been to Truax and I have researched the town quite a bit. Still, I've come up empty. It's as if they came to the Truax area, stayed for five years and disappeared without a trace. I wish I could find a link. One possibility is the Seventh Day Adventist Church. They have links to it in Montreal but I have no idea if it existed in Saskatchewan. I've found none.

Thank you, this photo depicts the old building exactly the way I remember it. My grandfather was JD Porter and we have fond memories of visiting Truax and poking around all of the old buildings. Mary Jane Porter/Morrison

Picture 3609 : The oldest surviving commercial building in Truax, this small frame structure was built in 1911 by George Riebel to serve as a Post Office, but never used as such. That year it became Fitchell's Butcher Shop, then the office for the Dollar Land Company, operated by J.D. Porter and John Schuett. The tin siding was added around 1920. It has been owned by Frank Korvemaker since 1981, and now stands as a herittge site in the community.
