Barnacle Goose

Barnacle Geese breed mainly on the Arctic islands of the North Atlantic (Greenland, Svalbard and Novaya Zemlya) and winter in western Scotland and Ireland, as well as the Netherlands. While individuals seen in New England might come from the Greenland population, they may also be escapees as they are popular with collectors, including zoos. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnacle_goose.)

The species has a white face and black head, neck, and upper breast. Its belly is white. The wings and its back are silver-gray with black-and-white bars.

This individual was seen among a flock of 100 or so canada geese.
