Who Were These People?

On many old buildings in Buffalo, are the names of people I assume were the original builder or owner of the building.

What were their hopes and dreams? How did they come to build these monuments to their being? What became of them?

Ruchte(Edward) was my paternal great-grand-uncle. He operated a hardware store in this building and his family (wife and four daughters) lived in the large apartment upstairs from the late 1800s until about 1950. Last time I saw the building was in 2010 when the downstairs was a Jamaican take out place. Next door was Elementary School #54 which is no longer there. Louis Engel, Jr.'s Studebaker dealership building (shown in one of these photographs) is now being rehabbed into the Ross Eye Institute is a unique and innovative collaboration between the Department of Ophthalmology at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the Olmsted Center for the Visually Impaired and University Ophthalmology Services, next door at 1176 Main St. I wonder if he is the son of Louis Engel the produce merchant, whose business was in the old Elk St. Market (now owned by the Senecas)and whose grand Victorian home (c.1889) on East Utica is up for rehab as the base for the Queen City Farm. If so, then a young German housemaid apparently committed suicide in his home in the early 1880s, having fallen in love with one of her "betters," sassy wench, a love that was certainly going nowhere. Engel, Jr.'s brother in law, a Cornell grad, dropped dead in the Bank of Lancaster (in Buffalo, I think)

Levy, King & White was an advertising agency that formed in 1982 and became one of Buffalo's three largest agencies with billings around $44 million (with clients like Welch's, Empire of America and Westwood Pharmaceuticals.) David Levy, Peter King & Strattan White. Many of their art directors have moved on and formed agencies of their own.

Burczynski's Bakery was on Stanislaus Street which was parallel to Broadway and Sycamore Streets. They had the best placek and jelly donuts you can imagine!

Theo. C. Fedders was probably the founder of Fedder's Radiator on Tonawanda St.

Burczynski's was a bakery -- I don't recall where it was but do remember their awesome rye bread. I think it has been gone for over 50 years.

I remember an old commercial in Buffalo: "Don't give me that bologna, give me Wardynski's".

I think this is a great idea for a gallery. I am sure each name had some significance in Buffalo's history. There must be a story behind each photo.

I think F. Wardynski was the butcher shop where my parents would purchase polish sausage and other products.
