Buffalo Psychiatric Center

Designed by H.H. Richardson, the cornerstone was laid in 1872. Located at 400 Forest Ave. Buffalo; it has had several names through the years, including the State Lunatic Asylum, the State Insane Asylum, and the Buffalo State Hospital. The Buffalo Psychiatric Center continues in more modern buildings around the now closed Richardson complex.

I worked there from 1979 to1990 I loved working psych. I actually miss it.

My mother was admitted to this place back in the 80's. When my brother and I went to go visit her, we went back the next day to release her. Back then it was just how you see on the movies today regarding insane asylum. It was one freaky place. Was one of the worst experiences of my childhood.

I have visited this place back in the early eighties while my mother was admitted there. My brother & I went to go see her and went back the next day to get her out. It was a terrible experience. It was just like the movies you see on tv regarding insane asylums. Totally freaky

I grew up and lived across the street, on Rees. This was a very busy place when still in use. I remember they use to take patients for walks outside in the summer. Many times at night you'd hear screams from the place. Occasionally we would ride our bikes on the grounds and see the patients in the wired caged, porch areas. I have always wanted to go and tour the inside. Imagine what the place must have been like, and what the patients experienced in the past.

i live in buffalo and have always wanted to get in but its not safe anymore... they condemed it a while back and every thing is falling apart inside. unfortunitly nobody wanted to take care of in and now nobody will

I'm wondering about being able to get in, myself. i'm not some kid that intends to party or do damage, i really want to get in at night and experience the feel and mood of this amazing building.

My first job was in the medical records department at the state hospital in 1969. What an experience for a kid just out of high school. They kept the old records down in what I called "the dungeon" and had records back to the late 1800's. It was pretty strange going down there by myself, but I loved it because I would read some of the old records.

A handful of friends and I used to sneak in here every now and then. The energy in there is insane, both when it was day time and the sun was shining thru, and in the middle of the night, when it was pitched black and the only light was coming from our flashlights. I would love to go back in there. I wish they would restore this building, it has so much amazing architecture both inside and out. It would be a great gig for the TAPS team to go in and investigate, as the building holds many spirits inside.

My mom worked here for a short while during the 1970's. This has got to be one of the most 'eerily beautiful' buildings around.

years ago my friends and i used to sneek into this building every week. i really hope they can restore this building, the architecture is even more amazing on the inside.
