This photo shows an example of the Ford Y-Block. The first Y-Block was introduced in the Lincoln line in 1952, replacing Ford’s venerable Flathead V8, which continued in the Ford line through 1953. The Y-Block was Ford’s first modern OHV V8. In 1954, the Flatheads were dropped from the Ford line, and two Y-Blocks were introduced at 239 CI for the Ford line and 256 CI for the Mercury line.
In 1955 the Y-Blocks were increased in size again, to 272 CI and 292 Ci, with the 272’s going into Ford’s, and 292's into Thunderbirds and Mercury Montclairs. In 1956, Ford’s got the 292. In 1957, the 312’s came out, which lasted through 1960. All told, the Y-Blocks lasted through the 1962 model year on cars, and through 1964 on trucks.
The pictured engine is a 1956 292, and is rated at 200 HP if in front of a manual transmission, and 202 HP if connected to an automatic transmission.
