Legendary Route 66 by Michael Karl Witzel and Gyvel Young-Witzel is an outstanding volume that takes a different tack in presenting Route 66. While other volumes start in Chicago and continues through Santa Monica, this book starts back in time and lays the groundwork for the need of, conception of, and the building of the road, in addition to the sights along the way.

Little known facts and places are presented, as well as historical figures. This reviewer especially enjoyed the profile of Seema Aissen Weatherwax, a heretofore unknown person to me who played an interesting role in the history of Route 66.

Another point is the immense research, utilizing photos from the Library of Congress, various University and private collections, presenting more than just the more common and usual views.

A truly unique and worthwhile volume on Route 66.
