A Puffin swimming. It's a Horned Puffin. Horned Puffins are named for the stiff black fleshy horn above each eye. The Horned Puffin is a chunky pigeon sized bird about 22″ long and with a 23″ wing span. It is black above and white below. It has a white head with a massive red, orange, and yellow bill, which is seasonal. The beaks of most birds are covered by a single horny sheath that is renewed as needed. In Horned Puffins, this sheath thickens into several plates which are shed during molt.
