According to legend Bago (formally known as Pegu - the British corruption of peh kou) was founded in 573AD.  Until the 18th century it was a major seaport visited frequently by various European nations and was a capital of various pre-burmanese kingdoms.  However, since then the river has shifted course and is now no longer connected to the sea.
 
Our first stop in Bago was to the Kyakhat Wine Monastery where the only thing of interest is watching 1200 monks have lunch.  Next up was the Shwemawdaw Pagoda which is the tallest pagoda in Myanmar at 114 metres that has a fallen tower (caused by an earthquake) that is still intact even after toppling.  Followed by a quick visit to the 54 metre long  Shwethalyaung (Reclining Buddha) with the story of its only creation mural’ed at the back.  Then a quick stop at the site of the Kanbawza Thadi (Hanthawadi Palace), which now only as one building of interest, and a even quicker look at the Kyaikpun Pagoda (Four Face Buddha).
