Robert and I were supposed to be at Stauffer at 9:00 a.m. for a work party with Barry Mitchell et al but Robert’s birthday party the night before has left us both in no shape to work. It is, however, a beautiful fall day, so I head off on my own to take a look at Prairie. We’ve had a couple of weeks of fine weather, and indeed Prairie is almost clear. I start out at the easement pool, (there are a couple of carloads of worn fishermen parked along the Creek in Peter Smith’s hayfield!) Nothing happening, nor is there any action at the pool upstream from Everdell Road bridge. What else but to try Stauffer; I try downstream from Buck for Wildlife. Manage 9 browns, mostly little guys, but catch a 10” and 14” (pool at beaverdam about a mile down) – all on Blue Winged Olives. Water temp - 47° on both Prairie and Stauffer. As I’m leaving about 7:00 p.m., I run into a couple of young guys who are disappointed to learn that there’s mostly trout in Stauffer; they’ve got the heavy gear out for jack!
Note: 3 fish on 3 consecutive casts at one stage – heavy hatch of Mayflies at 5-6:00 p.m., not blue-winged olives, slightly larger, greenish body.
