Thursday, May 2, 1996 Bow River

Drove down to Janzen’s Flats yesterday to check it out…turns out that you can actually get a 4 wheel drive down to the river, here – atleast for the time being. A small creek at the bottom of the trail may get bigger later on. Lise Grunn thought this access point was “closed” – and it might well be to anyone with a large heavy boat. Today Glen and I head out at 9:00 a.m. after a stop at Canadian Tire to get Glen a license; we’re on the water at Mac Flats at 11:30 a.m. Coo, variable weather the last while; 9°
high, showers, snow pellets, sun, wind from E, wind from W, calm, you name it. Water is fairly clear, river is low but much more current speed than the Clearwater. Lots of midges on water in the a.m. – actually see some rising fish at first island down – break off a decent brown on SJW; another brownie slashes at the strike indicator. I somehow leave without trying a dry fly. No results on the streamers today; I do land a nice, if scarred, 18-20” brown at the head of a side channel pool. Gorgeous river, lotsa birds to watch, although still no leaves on the trees and fair bit of ice on the edges of the river in spots. Still no fish for Glen at the end of the day (7:30 p.m., we’ve probably spent 3 hours wading, so 5 hours or so to float 7 miles or so). Massive hatch of BWO’s at 4:00 in the p.m., but the fish show absolutely no interest. No trouble at the takeout.
