Saturday May 25, 1996 Bow River

Leave town about 10:00, and by about 12:30 John S. and I are amongst the Voyageur Canoes, British Army types, canoers, jet skiers, jet boaters, zodiac types, and hardware chuckers who seem to inhabit this stretch of the Bow, between Ghost Dam and the Hwy 22x Bridge at Cochrane. The river here is a fair bit bigger than at Canmore; there are some mildly impressive standing waves at times in the greenish water; pretty good visibility. Weather still cool, although it’s all the way up to 20°in the sunshine today. 44°water. Word is that the middle Bow below Calgary has been fishing poorly (Peter Smallman sez is too cold). Mike Guinn sez the river is muddy down from the Highwood; Fish Creek also doing it’s bit for mud. Not much luck for John and I today; we try all the usual suspects, but I get one bite only, I think a 2# rainbow, on SJW. We stop a bit from time to time, get to the lake out at about 6:00; I take taxi back up to the dam, ($20.00). Take a look at the Little Red on the way back – should try the 4 mi. float up from Bergen Road take out. Smallman is Hector Lake fan - #10 Olive Stimulator – mid June – big caddis.
