It’s been a very dry (and lately hot – 3 days of 25º plus!). May so far – in contrast to the last few years. First real fishing trip of the year – Lloyd Graf’s stretch on Prairie. River looks great – clear and worryingly low. Lots of mayflies flying but none on water (even though it’s 62º at 2:00) – no evidence of salmonflies yet either, had speculated that hot weather may have precipitated things. Lloyd says no way, another 2 weeks. Also says he nymphed up ½ doz., one in 20” range! Make very big mistake when I take Tar – never again on serious fishing trip. He can’t help himself, wants to check out where I’m casting to. Beautiful 20º sunny day, fish from 2 – 5:00 – see no rises, catch one 8” brown on #14 Royal Wulff – must remember “dropper nymph” idea.
