June 7, 1990

Arrive at Jackson’s @ 9:30 a.m., head upstream. Slow start, but things start happening about noon – catch some little guys on #14 Pale Morning Dun (bluish) – water 48° in the a.m. Around 1:30 notice a number of largish greenish-brown mayflies (brown drakes? green drakes?) and things really start to happen. In the stretch just before and after the cattle crossing, find a number of largish browns – the first big guy is kind enuff to give me a second chance – big fight and I net him! 14-16” fish, really smacked the Green Drake imitation; then it’s more of the same. Have a really big one on for a moment in pool near TV project, but he slips away. Lose another large fish after major struggle when the tippet breaks as the fish is at my feet. Another big fish inhales the Green Drake so deep I simply cut the fly and hope he’ll be ok. Switch to a #10 Adams (when I run out of #12 Green Drakes) and it seems to work just as well. Real nice stretch upstream of TV project, miss another fair fish, catch one while the fly is drifting behind me! Stream now warmed up to 56°. Best action between 2-4:00, then things seem to cool off. I’m tired anyway so head home having caught 12 fish overall and missed as many. Note Mitchell’s truck is @ Jackson’s when I return (altho clearly I was the only person on this stretch since recent rains – no other footprints). My best day so far.
