June 30, 1992

Date: Tuesday, June 30, 1992
Species: Cutts
Time:
Westcastle River

Water Temp/Time: 44º Air Temp/Time: 50ºF high

Peak Activity for this day: 2:30 – 5:30

Been raining now for 2 days straight, and so it goes. We’ve learned however that prime time for dry fly fishing is roughly 2:00 – 5:00. We sit in the truck on the banks of the Westcastle and simply wait until we sufficient numbers of what we’re calling PMD’s (there are actually about 3 different varieties of may flies happening) and then head out in our rain gear. Robert and I basically fish the same beat as yesterday – Ken works up toward us through the beaver dam stretch below. I hook a nice 14” ‘er (on TV!) on PMD to start things off, and it turnsinto an excellent afternoon – land 20 fish (mostly on White Wulff) – Ken and Robert have similar days as well 9Gr. Drakes, PMD, Adams, all working). We keep ½ doz. fish for supper. Super when grilled on Coleman stove, eaten with bottle of red (!) wine around the campfire. Firm, tasty fish. Rain stops as soon as we put up a second tarp at about 10:00 p.m. Real cold outside – lots of snow at higher elevations. Robert spots bighorn sheep while we’re waiting for the duns at Westcastle.
