June 28, 1993

Date: Monday, June 28, 1993
Time: 11:30 – 7:30
Species: Rainbow Trout
Crowsnest River
Water Temp/Time: 55º approx. Air Temp/Time: 70º

Peak Activity for this day: 11:30 – 3:30

Now this is what it’s all about. We head down to Burmis Lake, Robert starts @ 1st bridge up from Westcastle Road, I take middle section, Ken parks @ Leitch Collieries and heads down below the “Lavern” ranch. It’s clear, light winds, water is looking good. Tie on a Yellowstone Hopper and the action begins almost immediately. I’m fishing quickly (too fast maybe, but I want to see much of this stretch as I can. Beautiful water, particularly where the river makes big bend against cliff faces. Fantastic action, and up landing 12 fish, almost all in 14-16” range. Ken does the same, as does Robert, all on gold stone imitations. By golly, we’ve caught the golden stone hatch. Maybe my best day of fly fishing ever, certainly in terms of good fish. Robert reports getting snapped off by fish possibly 20” +. Montana will be hard pressed to top this. (Note: this is the stretch where Bob Scammell caught 40 fish, with 3 over 20”. Can almost believe it).
