Peak Activity for this day: early p.m., dusk

Meet up with Garth and Gord Thursday night and get into flyfishing school. Some practice casts & Burmis Lake and a few knot tying instructions (couple of little ‘bows from the Lake @ dusk). Up early on Friday and start the boys out with some nymphing up from Len Green’s private bridge (we meet Len later on) – no fish but lotsa snarled lines and cursing! There’s been record cold weather lately and not much insect activity as a result (i.e. none on windshield on the way down although pick up 7’9” 3 wt. Sage @ County Pleasures with nice little Orvis Battenkill reel). Anxious to get the guys into some fish – make rash guarantee of action on the Westcastle – sure enough, both into little (and maybe not so little i.e. 14”) cutts on both PMD’s and San Juan Worms! I worm up a couple of pretty cuts myself, both up from the bridge and in the swamp section. At dusk, we’re at the “Big Back Eddy/Oxbow by the Pasture “Pool – fool a couple of little rainbows with Elk Hair Caddis. Fart around with some cautious risers in the Big Eddy – the guys are getting a sense of what it’s about. Back to the lake, pull in a dozen or so, Gord gets 3 or 4 with Antron Adams! (I use about #18 Compardun, twitched slowly). Garth breaks my 7 wt, loses of box of flies!
