June 14/15, 2003 – Whitetail Lake

Well, a bit of an excursion… Frank and I are off to this jewel of a lake just west of Canal Flats, B.C. We arrive late (1/2 hour of rough dusty road in) and the main campground is full but there’s space across the lake. We notice that a rear tire is flat, but it’s getting dark so we leave it for later. Up early the next a.m. – it’s a lot like bonefishing! Sight casting to big cruising rainbows. As good a tactic as any is to anchor the boat and wait for the fish to come to you. Frank does real well; gets fish on scuds, beadheads, caddis dries, worm patterns(!). Local advice (as we’re leaving) – size 14 caddis with bottom hackle trimmed. Frank has cool 2 man tent; cool campsite. Lots of other FF’ers, most drowning chronies in the middle. One boat has a casting platform and push pole! When we’re leaving on Sunday, we learn: no spare! Fortunately camp manager is a handy guy with small compressor and tire plug kit – it gets us home, saving real problems otherwise. Lucky.
