July 28, 1991

After witnessing the heavy hatch last night, I’m perhaps less enthusiastic than usual about getting going today – particularly since I know that we’re not going to be able to hang around long enough for a repeat performance. We do, however, have to get Jim hooked up to a fish, so we settle into the pool just below the confluence with “Nice & Easy” Creek about 1:00. Water temp. up to 56°, but few flies on the water – eventually take Jim down to the small pool that was so productive the day before, and after a few misses, he’s got one! See photo! Ken had a productive morning (caught 3) and is on a run in the p.m., too – nails a nice 13” ‘er, couple more, all in the home stretch. Meanwhile, I’ve missed a bunch, but no hookups until I hit Nice & Easy Creek – turns out that every little plunge pool is full of little cutthroat trout (up to 10” or so) – I lose track of the exact number of these little guys I catch but must be at least 20. Ken catches up to me and has similar action. Once again the fly of choice seems to be the Royal Wulff (altho Ken’s morning results were on a Trude fished wet). Ken and I carry on for about an hour longer than planned, and it’s tough to quit, but we must. There’s talk of making this an annual outing – perhaps the boys are getting a hint of flyfishing’s addictive powers.
