July 26, 1990

Up @ 3 a.m. to take kids to airport; off to N. Raven in p.m., after checking Prairie @ Qually’s – still unfishable. Warm but overcast day, water 54° @ Jacksons. Lots of pale morning duns (2:30 – 5:00), lots of fish rising, but fish seem very spooky. No luck at all until I tie on a #16 Royal Wulff, then I land the next 3 brown trout I see rising, a 13 1/2” ‘er, 10” ‘er & a 5” ‘er. I fish up to the end of the Shunda Creek stretch; on what I had decided would be my last cast of the day, I go to reel in my line and of course miss a nice brown. Can’t quit now of course, and spot another riser which I nail with a downstream approach, let the fly float into him. He takes it with a mighty whoosh, but turns out to be a 12” ‘er. This I make my last cast. Stream is clear and in good shape, although noticeably lower since the last time I fished this stretch (June 10). Note the biggest brown acted like a rainbow with some spectacular leaps.
