Draw by fact that Alberta record brown trout taken there last fall, I head to Swan Lake – fairly big, loaded with insects, no fish in evidence but lady tells me she caught 8 lb. trout yesterday, sinking line, flatfish. Hmmm. Fart around for a while but conclude that a boat of some sort would make more sense or perhaps I’m just intimidated by one fairly big body of water. Must get over that – anyhow, try various dries, nymphs, streamers – no action. Should have hung around for the evening action, but decide to try Phyllis Lake – very small and pretty but also no sign of trout. Maybe lakes should be reserved for a.m. and dusk. Off to Prairie – try stretch down from Robert’s – (next “no exit” road east) – hike in. Creek’s pretty dirty – miss a little guy on hopper, see only / rise, no bugs, so off to Strubel. As always, lots of fish rising – good action with #8? grey dragonfly nymph – good fish breaks me off, land a dozen or so little guys (up to 8”) until they get real selective near dark (midges? what?). Must see Swan Lake at dark sometime.
