Very interesting… a public, stocked lake about same size as Struble, but seems to be a little more productive – also highly touted by the Government – see signs. Lots of action from the outset on dragonfly nymph – see the big flies around. Windy day, miss a lot of takes, some by good fish. Land ˝ a doz. 6” – 10” rainbows by supper – then another float tuber starts catching fish on some kind of dry fly – and I can’t get any action on what I’m using. As luck might have it, 2 guys in a canoe ask their pal in the tube what he’s using, and I eavesdrop – “Elk Hair Caddis” – I notice that by golly there are a few caddis around now, paddle back to shore, get caddis flies from truck, and back out. Promptly lose a good fish when he breaks me off. Then have a tussle with fresh 17” ‘ er, from in the lily pads. By now it’s calm and I’m sure you could hear the Hardy whining from across the lake. Land a few more smaller fish on caddis – then the lack literally erupts with rising fish at dusk – looks like a hailstorm. No longer any interest in caddis, though, suspect fish are taking midges, see some tiny mayflies emerging. Very frustrating being in middle of this rise but unable to fool fish.
