Today we start at the "Wade-Fishing only" section of the river. Local regulations dictate that it's okay to drift through, but you can't fish out of a boat for several miles. The river is definitely high, and it is somewhat off-colour, with only a couple of feet of visibility, but still more green than brown, and certainly fishable. Indeed, we quickly get into fish, and it seems like when we find a few, we find several more. We get some nice rainbows to 17", some smaller browns and some chunky whitefish. The typical rig is a stonefly nymph on top, with a Prince nymph or SJW below. We find fish below gravel bars, in sidechannels, and in pocket water. There are a ton of raptors in the valley today, and we get to watch several aerial battles between the birds. We end up the day with a little more walk and wade, up by Three Dollar Bridge. We're back in town to settle up by 6:00 or so, with a drive thru Idaho on the way back. Peter expertly dodges his Clackacraft around the many large boulders in the high water conditions, and finds the fish notwithstanding that he's never fished this river under these high water conditions before. We hit the road home, and make it to Shelby at around midnight. Almost run out of gas on the grassy plains of Montana. Grilled cheese sandwiches at the Country Corral in Shelby at 1:00 a.m.
