May 30, 2006 --- Firehole River and Gibbon River, Wyoming

We spend the morning at the fabulous Firehole River in the park. It is an alien landscape along the upper reaches --- geysers, bubbling mudpots, steam bursting from the ground, lavarock riverbottom. Throw in some eager little browns and rainbows, and it is quite a combination. The morning dawns clear and sunny, and there is very little surface action. However, a front rolls in, the baetis and some PMD start poppin', and so do the fish. We land a bunch of trout in the 6 to 10 inch range, all on dry flies. We break for lunch at 1:00 or so, and head over to the Gibbon River above the falls, where we nail some more little trout, this time on attractor patterns such as Royal Trudes and Royal Wulffs. We end the day in the canyon stretch of the Firehole, just above it's confluence with the Madison. We'd seen a fair number of stonefly husks along the Gibbon, which is at a higher elevation than the Firehole, so we try slamming some big ol' salmonfly dry patterns, and lo and behold, we actually get some interest from the trout. Rob and I both land a few more, and miss a few more. Pete's guide trick of the day: when moving your vehicle a short distance, and don't want to break down the rods, just stick 'em under the windshield wipers (see photo)! We're back in town by 6:30 p.m.; steak at Bullwinkles hits the spot.
