Rob and I meet up with guide Peter McDaniel at Madison River Outfitters here in West Yellowstone, Montana at 8:00 a.m. Peter is an easygoing fella, very knowledgeable about Yellowstone National Park (he's a snowmobile guide in the winter), is into golf and Gordon Setters. Also knows his flyfishing stuff. We head to the stretch of the Madison River between Hebgen Lake and Quake Lake. The Madison is half clear, and half muddy, due to the influence of Cabin Creek, which is pumping a lot of chocolate milk at the moment. At normal flows, the river here is wadeable, but at present we need a boat to get across to the clear side, so Peter's drift boat gets put to use. We are just gearing up at the rough launch area, when a local old timer pulls up. He hurries to beat us across the river in his pontoon boat, thence to the prime hole in the vicinity. Oh well, no matter, as we do pretty well on the day using a variety of nymphs (including, I must admit, the good ol' wire SJW, or "Atomic Worm" as it is apparently known down here). We get rainbows, browns, cutthroat and a cutbow. Oh yeah, I get a whitefish, too. Pick up a little tip from Pete: rather than use a toothpick to keep the corkie in place, just loop the line thru the indicator twice. Works slick. The weather is just like home, a mix of sun, cloud, wind, calm, rain, sleet and snow. The old timer can't find any fish today, but we somehow locate a bunch in the pool that he eventually vacates. There is only a couple of miles of water to fish in this area, and we end up heading back into town about 4:00 p.m. This gives Rob and I time to do a bit of a tour of Yellowstone National Park, and Rob fishes the Madison in the park for a bit.
