May 28, 2006 --- Missouri River, Montana

We're up at 7:00 and grab some bacon and eggs at the Frenchman's. Our erstwhile guide Neale Streeks is at Wolf Creek even before we get up, tying a few flies for the day. The forecast for today sucked (heavy rain, big winds), but we luck out... the morning dawns calm and drizzly. We eventually even get a bit of sunshine in mid afternoon. It's a reasonably productive day on the river. Neale has us fishing size 20 and smaller midge and baetis patterns with even smaller midge pupae droppers. 5x tippet is prescribed. Later in the day it's parachute caddis patterns on top with a little caddis emerger below. There are still a ton of midges on the water, and a few baetis and caddis. Rob lands a trio of nice browns (20-20 club!). I would have photos of all of them, but spent the first half of the day taking photos without a freakin' memory card in the camera. Sheesh. What a numbskull. Anyhow, Rob and I land half a dozen or so nice fish apiece, including a few early fish on streamers. We also have a whole bunch of LDR's (10 or 12 apiece?), an almost inevitable by-product of fishing downstream to rising fish with tiny flies, I guess. The mighty Mo is fairly uncrowded, especially for the first half of the day. What a superb trout stream , the Mo. Even with all the recent rain and snow, it is running clear and fishing fine.
