December 4, 1999 --- Hurunui River, South Island, New Zealand
Looks like a bluebird day to begin with... we arrive at the last pool on the "gorge" section, after a long drive over some wild backcountry trails. I spot a fish; down we go --- spook a smaller fish, which is what I assume ate my nymph, nope, it was the big guy... Turns into a very windy day, but with some pretty good action nonetheless. Land 2 or 3 nice browns today, lose a couple more good 'uns when they come undone. Off to Hanmer Springs and the Green Acres Motel (suite!) for the night (half-hour nap on the river earlier). Memorable "cliff fish" in the howling wind.
