It's day two, and we decide to make it "Hunt for Permit" day, and we soon find ourselves on a big flat north of the Casa Blanca lodge, drifting in the breeze and scanning for the elusive fish. We find some big sharks and some decent sized barracuda; I take a shot at the 'cuda with my spinning gear and tube lure, but no action on the red version. I switch to chartreuse green. We get into a few bonefish on the beautiful white sand beach south of Casa Blanca. Rob is fishing a little shrimp pattern, which is noticed by a largish 'cuda, who in turn attempts to inhale my greenish tube lure! Some frantic action ensues, including an acrobatic leap by the angry predator, who eventually is brought to the boat, unhooked, and released, albeit a bit worse for wear... not a good day for the barracuda :-) We then head further north to permitville, but can't find anybody home. After a few hours of fruitless searching, we decide that it's cerveza time, and we're on our way home and motoring, when all of a sudden Potro jumps up and waves to Benito to stop the boat. He's seen some permit tails on the glassy waters, and it turns out that there are several groups of permit cruising with fins and tails sparkling in the late day sun. We get a bunch of seemingly decent shots at these fish, with no interest whatsoever displayed, as the permit collectively give us the fin. Exciting stuff, tho. Off to town we go for nachos and cerveza, and supper at the Bonefish restaurant, and a few too many margaritas.
