It's Day One of our trip to Punta Allen, Ascension Bay, Quintana Roo, Yucutan, Mexico! The ride down yesterday was unremarkable other than the speeding ticket settled in the old-fashioned way... i.e by paying the $100 US "fine" in cash directly to the nice policeman :-) Our trip was organized under the auspices of genial outfitter Garry Pierce, of Tailwater Drifters in Red Deer. We're on the water by about 7:45 a.m. with guides (and brothers) Benito and "El Potro" ("Little Horse") Caamal, and it doesn't take them too long to get us into bonefish. Indeed, the action on bones is pretty steady throughout the day, which starts out to be a bit cloudy and breezy, but which eventually turns into a beautiful afternoon; clear and pretty much dead calm. Rob ends up landing a half dozen; I boat four and break off a couple more. We get plenty of shots at fish, especially in the latter part of the day, when we find a ton of tailing fish. Rob also briefly sticks a good sized permit, which in turn gets bonked on the head by a crab pattern tossed by yours truly. We do a fair bit of wading on the (mostly) firm flats on the inside of the peninsula leading down to the quaint little town of Punta Allen. Our guides are hardworking and enthusiastic, and have the requisite eagle eyes. I do a bit of prospecting for big barracuda with tube lures, and land a little one on a bonefish fly. I also take a shot at a very large snook; cool looking critter. We see a porpoise up close on the ride home across the glassy waters of Ascension Bay. Turns out that all the restaurants in town are closed for some reason tonight, so supper consists of some chicken tacos prepared by the gal who sometimes does our lunches. This is a fly fishing town... pop. 400, it employees about 40 guides from time to time amongst the various lodges and outfits who have the necessary permissions to fish from boats in the bay, which is mostly part of a National Park.
