November 9, 2008 --- Red Deer River, Alberta

Frank's concept is to go out to the Red Deer to catch some whitefish, and have one for lunch! Furthermore, this is to be done with no matches or lighters, and nothing but a knife for equipment. Frank practices some bushcraft skills, and before long we are enjoying a bracing cup of pine needle tea, brewed over a fire below a tripod-like device, fashioned from sticks bound together with a willow switch (and by the way, pine needle tea tastes just like..... pine needles). A whitefish is duly dispatched, and roasted over the open flames whilst affixed to a willow skewer. The fish is quite nice, although I wish I had brought some soy sauce. Frank's new Bull Mastiff "Brody" accompanies us on the trip, and behaves very nicely. It gets up to plus nine or so today; still no snow in Central Alberta yet this year...
