September 6-7, 2008 --- St. Mary River, British Columbia
Mark and I stay at the resort at St. Eugene, and fish the Mary from the lake down to the campground on Saturday, and from St. Eugene down to the Kootenay on Sunday. As expected, lots of cutts on drys and nymphs (and plenty of whities, too; on nymphs) with a few Northen Pikeminnow taken on streamers. Not so many cutts on streamers this year, and the ones we do catch are not of huge size... a fifteen incher is a good one. Noteworthy that most good pools are full of spawning Kokanee salmon, which, according to one of the guides we meet on the river, are a fairly recent phenomenon on the Kootenay and it's tribs. Mark foul hooks one of the little buggers, but they have other things on their minds than eating, apparently. Had a funny incident on Sunday. I notice Mark has a fish on, so I lay my rod down across the pontoons with the dry fly dangling downstream as I grab the camera to get a few shots of Mark. However, a cuttie decides to eat my fly at this particular juncture, thus yanking my rod into the river! I am not quite sure what to do as the fish is jumping and the top of my rod is waving up and down in the current; this in about four feet of water. I am thinking that I may have to go swimming for my rod, but Mark manages to snag the line with one of his oars. Naturally, the fish is still attached; might have been one of the better fish we landed, lol. About a half hour later, whilst unsnagging a fly, I set the rod down on the rocks, only to stumble and step on the rod, cleanly snapping the Z-Axis above the bottom section. Sigh.... another shipment to Sage coming up :-( Also, note that the Mary below the lake is "fly fishing only". Although I can't seem to find it anywhere in the online regs (not saying that it ain't there), a guide tells us that this means no strike indicator fishing; i.e. nothing other than a single fly may be attached to the line.
