"Fins and Skins" today... we do 18 holes at St. Eugene Mission, which is in wonderful shape, and follow that up with a bit of a fish on "The Mary" (also called the "St. Mary's River" in some places). We inquire at the clubhouse about permission to fish the river , and are told that we would need to get permission from the native band that has the reserve. And the chief was out of town at the moment. So, I'm on my way over to speak with the farmer who owns the land downstream of St. Eugene's, and run into Cindy Pighin, who runs shuttles on the river, and who, with her husband Clint, run a boat launch, and now have some cabin rentals as well (250.489.9745). For a small parking fee, we are permitted to fish downstream. Between 5:30 and 8:00 p.m., we get into some smallish cutties and rainbows on the usual foam ant type patterns. I spot some big fish in a pool that turned out to be... northern pikeminnows (formerly the non-politically-correct squawfish). Got the impression that the folks who float the river thru the reserve don't worry about getting permission to do so. Also sounds like the middle section, from the Mcphee (sp?) bridge down to St. Eugenes fishes better than the lower stretch this time of year.
