July 30, 2006 --- Bow River, Alberta

We leave Red Deer about 7:00 a.m., and after a quick stop at "Fourbucks" for espresso, we are on the road, and on the water by 9:30 or so, at the Hwy. 24 bridge put-in. Three or four other boats at the launch; all gear fishermen. The river has changed dramatically since the big floods last year. See several boats tied up at the old Silvertip Outfitters site; looks like they may have tents set up as well downstream. I have been in a mood to pound streamers, so that's what I try first, and within minutes I've got a nice fish on a Neale Streekes - tied orange foam cone head rabbit strip deal. We get action of one kind or another pretty steadily thru the day --- looks, break-off's, swirls, chases, LDR's, and we actually do land some. Rob tries the good ol' spinner blade behind the streamer method (gasp!), and gets a lot of interest, but not so many actual takers. A switch to nymphing pays off at days end as we get into a well-oxygenated run stacked up with hungry bows, as a storm blows in. Winds gusting to 60 kph in mid-afternoon! Lots of golden stone husks in evidence; stonefly nymphs do well. We land a couple of handfuls of decent fish, altho the bigger ones, naturally, got away :-) Home by about 10:00 p.m. All in all a typical day on the Bow... exasperating at times and gratifying at others...
