May 20, 2006 --- Red Deer River, Alberta

Yesterday was "opening day" on the Red Deer River and many Central Alberta Lakes. Mark M. and I had originally planned to go pike fishing this morning, but we bump that to tomorrow given the strong winds this morning, knowing how the jonboat handles in waves. So, I walk down to the river for a couple of hours. The river is very low; 21 m3/s or so. Lots of visibility, and one could pretty much wade across the river in the right spots if need be. Too bad it didn't stay like this all year. Too bad we couldn't fish the river for the last month --- c'mon Fish and Wildlife, how about catch and release fishing on the Red Deer in April and May!! Anyhow, there are some (what I am calling) Skwalas around, as well as a few caddis and mayflies. I find some rising fish, and proceed to have brief engagements with three of them. I suspect two were whities, one looked like a nice brown. I manage to land one whitey who eats a little mayfly pattern.
