April 13-17, 2014 --- Skeena Drainage, British Columbia
Things are a bit tougher this year than last. The Skeena is muddy, so we fish the Kitty the first couple of days but don't see much despite good conditions there. Curtis does hook into a chrome devil fish that screams downstream cartwheeling and generally freaking out. Not surprisingly, the fish comes undone. Darren estimates the hen to be about 15-17 #'s. We try the Skeena the next couple days, but it's not clearing as fast as we'd hoped, so we also do some walking and wading on an unclassified trib in the afternoons, and on day 4, I manage a pretty hen whilst swinging a black and blue Hoh-Bo type intruder. The next AM, Darren takes us back to the only local bit of clean/green water on the Skeena, and I'm lucky enough to land a hard fighting 40.5" buck, taken on a purplish intruder (tied by Frank?). Cool to find these guys in shallow water on a huge flat. 23.5 #'s according to the "Tom Keelin fish weight calculator". Get a few more valuable casting tips from Darren (i.e. you can snap T from either side if enough room). Excellent hospitality and guiding once again from Darren Wright and Missy MacDonald at The Steelhead House in Terrace, BC!
