March 26, 1998 --- Freeport, Bahamas

Final instalment for this visit to the flats. Our old friend Mr. Wind is once again with us, from the North/Northeast, but as usual we see a fair number of fish in the morning. I get a dozen or so shots but the fish seem either nervous or uninterested. Finally get a small taker around noon, but that's it for the day. Conditions are apparently quite unfavorable, so we book it at about two o'clock. Rough seas mean you take a pounding while moving around. Note: we see an independent guide with a client from Miami; apparently he quit working for Pelican Bay. William says that you can always find someone to take you out. Note re: flies: seems that the trick here is to use lead-eyed flies (heavy, medium or light), as opposed to bead-chain eyes. William says best time is late April or early May. His best day was fifty-four fish, with Jim Hoffman. As with fishing everywhere, timing is everything --- he speaks of days where the bones are ravenous, i.e. after a cold front passes through, where they literally fight over the fly. Must return sometime...
